Looking for love, is a quest that befalls most of us. Whether it is seeking love from our parents, partners or friends. However, we rarely look to ourselves to find this love. I think of loving oneself as practice for successfully loving others and receiving love. Have you ever heard the quote, “If you don’t love yourself, don’t expect others to love you.”? I find nothing more true. Think about it. If you don’t know how to love yourself, the one person you have spent your whole life with, the one person you know better than anyone else, how will you know how to give love to others? More importantly, if you cannot love who you are, how can you expect a complete stranger to love you? It is like a mother expecting stranger to love a child she herself has deemed unlovable.
When a child is born, he or she is simply loved for being alive. This child doesn’t have a prestigious college degree, he/she doesn’t have more kissable cheeks than other babies and he/she doesn’t need to prove themselves to be worthy of love, they are simply just loved. Sometimes, we forget that simply by being ourselves we are worthy of great love.
Like I said loving yourself is practice, if you don’t treat yourself with the utmost care and respect, you will not expect or demand it from others. Here are some ways to love yourself more:
Love yourself, if it isn’t something you are used to will take some time to get the hang of it. But when you truly start seeing and appreciating who you are others will see it too and you won’t have to seek love because you will always be surrounded by it. Make the pledge to love yourself more today.
